new leadership and has written about them here:
Leaders Do The Work
I have "done the work" since my days as a teen facilitator teaching anti-gang and anti-drug programs at the elementary schools, housing projects, and community centers in my neighborhood. Throughout my campaign, I have engaged parents and concerned citizens at every opportunity. I strive to understand what folks are looking for from their school district and will continue to do so after April the 6th.
Leaders Have A Following
I have been active in my community since elementary school and active in politics since college. As a candidate, I have brought together a very broad and diverse group of people in support of moving the school district in a new direction. This was demonstrated when we turned in over 1,500 signatures in two weeks to get on the ballot for the April 6th election. This is a network I plan to expand and utilize to the benefit of our scholars.
Leaders Are Committed To Unity
The underlying theme of my campaign has been one of unity and bridge building. We are a deeply fractured city and the barriers that we have built between ourselves have ultimately been to the detriment of our scholars. This is an issue I feel incredibly passionate about and will tirelessly work to address.
Leaders Are Committed To Results
The council of Great city Schools told us in 2006 that the school board spends an insubstantial amount of time on scholar achievement and a substantial amount of time on political grandstanding, micromanagement, and pet projects. Although I believe that we have begun to move in the right direction, I don't believe we will fully be there until we replace the status quo.
Leaders Are Committed To Governance
There are clear lines that must not be crossed between the board of governance and the administrative staff. As an employee in a political office, I never commanded or directed staff to take any action. This is the same attitude that I will bring to the School Board. I have spoken consistently about the need to elect board members who understand the difference between governance and management.
